Bill Reichert, Communications Director for the Minnesota Voters' Alliance, sent me an e-mail suggesting that I disseminate some information about the budget legislation being proposed in the Legislature. Sue Jeffers has also been vocal about this issue, as has Ed Liberty Watch (check out http://edlibertywatch.org for more information).
An unfortunate reality that we face is that while many of the freshman legislators we elected last November are fairly conservative and right-of-center, many of those in the Legislature's Republican leadership are a little more liberal and left of those elected more recently. There are a couple of pork-laden omnibus Education and Health/Human spending bills sponsored by those Republican legislators that will be coming to the floor of the Legislature for a vote in the next week or two.
The committees mainly responsible for them are Health & Human Services Finance -- led by Committee Chair Jim Abeler, one of the override six who voter to override Governor Pawlenty's veto of spending a couple of years ago -- and the Education Finance Committee, led by Chair Pat Garofalo.
One of the places you can get more information is the aforementioned Ed Liberty Watch. In the meantime, if you would like to help out, we suggest sending thank you notes to the following legislators for their positions (and continue urging them to maintain their position of voting NO on the Education and Health/Human Services omnibus spending bills):
firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org; ; email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org
The next thing you can do is e-mail the following legislators and let them know that if they can't start doing what they were sent to St. Paul to do, we can and we will kick them out:
email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org; email@example.com; firstname.lastname@example.org
The sad thing is, these people not only are voting like liberal Democrats in many cases, they are harassing the real conservatives I just asked you to thank. They are doing the job of the Democrats, for the Democrats. We have a lot of work to do if we expect Republicans to hold the line on spending before the Legislature adjourns in May.
