Kurt Daudt was elected minority leader of the Minnesota House Republicans on November 10th. I have known Kurt for six years. Pictured at left are the two of us at the Republican National Convention this past August. Daudt is an interesting choice. He is a member of the establishment, of course, having served as Marty Seifert's campaign manager in 2010, and having supported Pete Hegseth for Senate in 2012. Both campaigns attacked non-establishment folks pretty aggressively, so unsurprisingly, both fell short in their efforts. |

(Authored by Paul Demko and sent out in this week's edition of the Politics in Minnesota newsletter.) In the midst of drought conditions like those currently afflicting the Minnesota political news cycle, we all must be grateful for the occasional storm. And whatever else one might say about thePine County Republican Party, the party and its chairman, activist and former legislative candidateRudy Takala, certainly know how to whip up a storm. The county is part of House District 11B, which is home to one of this year's more anarchic legislative races. |

When Minnesota’s Republican Senate Caucus hired Michael Brodkorb as their communications director, they may not have expected it would end witha lawsuitand multiple retirements. Yet while those specific results may have been unpredictable, a person of reasonable judgment could have figured that it would not end well. Even so, it is fortunate that then-Majority Leader Amy Koch was not exercising reasonable judgment when Brodkorb was hired. The incident has been good for the GOP and for democracy. |
