Two Minnesota Republicans, Sen. Carla Nelson and Rep. Mike Benson, have proposed doubling the state’s excise tax on cigarettes from $1.23 to $2.52 per pack. Nelson suggested that at some point in the future, the revenue could be used to replace some taxes on commercial property. “It’s getting rid of a bad tax for a good tax,” she said. Before using it to lower commercial property taxes, the legislators suggested that the intent would be to pay back $2 billion borrowed from Minnesota’s schools to pay for state spending. |

The biggest news of the weekend comes in the fact that Michael Brodkorb resigned all of the positions affiliating him with the Republican Party of Minnesota in wake of the scandal involving Sen. Majority Leader Amy Koch. When it was reported on Fridaythat Koch was stepping down from her position because of allegations that she had engaged in an "inappropriate" relationship with a staffer, Brodkorb resigned his position as communications director with the Minnesota Senate GOP. The most newsworthy items in the race for chair of the Minnesota Republican Partycome courtesy of Terry McCall & Brandon Sawalich. I received word from Brandonthat he is thinking about it; I received news (originally from CoreySax) that Terry McCall is also thinking about it. (Click hereto read more about the movement for McCall on MPR. I first met Brandon in 2009; I have known or at least known of Terry McCall for a couple of years longer. I also serve with Terry on the board of the Republican Liberty Caucus of Minnesota. |

On Tuesday, December 13th, I will be hosting or participating in multiple events at Tobies Restaurant & Bakery in Hinckley, Minnesota beginning at 6:00 p.m. The first two guests to commit to the event are 10th Judicial District Judge Tad Jude, elected in 2010 to serve our region until 2016, and talk radio host Sue Jeffers. I will announce more special guests closer to the event. As I am also the chairman of the Pine County Republicans, I will be chairing a meeting of that group at 6:00 p. |

This is a piece authored by Charley Shaw of the St. Paul Legal Ledger/Capitol Report. He graciously included my analysis in the piece. You can access Bob's interview with Zellers from last Friday byclicking here; you may access Sue's program of speaking about the budget byclicking here. (The headline on the segment with Bob & Zellers is wrong; so is the date. Ignore it and simply run the audio file.) Asked by Bob why Republicans were increasing, spending Zellers replied,"It was the forecast.... The taxpayers of the state produced more than the bureaucrats at the capitol expected them to." |

KTLK hosts Sue Jeffers and Bob Davis will be speaking at Simply Right on Friday, May 20th. The time will be 7:00 p.m.; the location will be Tobies in Hinckley. Sue's program runs from 4-7 p.m. Saturday evenings; Bob's program runs every weekday morning. They do a "roundtable" program together with Tom Emmer that runs every Saturday morning at 6 a.m. Both Sue & Bob have visted our group in the past, but this will be a first for having them both up at the same time. I am thrilled that they were willing to do this event!

Paul Demko has a story in Politics in Minnesota talking about all of the budgetary issues I've been talking about here.Click here to view it.(Subscription required; otherwise simply scroll down.) Speaker Zellers was on KTLK this morning with Bob Davis & Tom Emmer. He makes a really bad spokesman for the GOP. He simply cannot explain in anything but double-talk how the GOP can justify increasing spending by $2 billion. All he wants to talk about is the fact that Mark Dayton wants to increase spending as well. |

Paul Demko's article for Politics in Minnesota (Click here) details Rep. Franson's recent appearance on Sue Jeffers' radio program. Here are some of the most relevant excerpts: "As a matter of fact, we were told [by leadership] that there is principles and there is governing and sometimes you gotta go down to St. Paul and you’ve just got to throw your principles aside and govern.... I’m not going to throw my principles aside, not at all. I was told [upon arriving in St. Paul] that I was not elected on Obama-care. |
